Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Head of State20th Century

Killed on 15 August 1975 at his residence in Dhaka, together with most of his family, by army officers in a military coup.

Overview

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, called Bangabandhu or friend of Bengal, led the Awami League and the movement for autonomy of East Pakistan, and became the founding leader of Bangladesh after the 1971 Liberation War. His government faced famine, economic crisis, and unrest, and in 1975 he established a one-party system. A group of junior and mid-ranking army officers stormed his house and killed him and members of his family, including his young son Russel. His daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived because they were abroad. An indemnity ordinance shielded the killers until its repeal in 1996, and several were executed in 2010 after trials. Sheikh Hasina later served as prime minister.
