Overview

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister of India in 1984 after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi and led the Congress Party to a landslide victory. His government promoted telecommunications, computers, and economic liberalization, but was damaged by the Bofors corruption scandal. In 1987 he sent the Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka, where it fought the LTTE, and lost power in the 1989 election. While campaigning to return to office he was killed along with more than a dozen others. Indian investigators established LTTE responsibility, and several conspirators were convicted. His widow Sonia Gandhi later led the Congress Party.
