Liaquat Ali Khan
Shot on 16 October 1951 at a public meeting in Company Bagh, Rawalpindi; the first Prime Minister of Pakistan died shortly afterwards.
Overview
Liaquat Ali Khan was a leading figure of the All-India Muslim League and the closest lieutenant of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the movement for Pakistan, becoming its first prime minister at independence in 1947. After the death of Jinnah in 1948 he was the dominant figure in the new state, guiding the Objectives Resolution that framed constitutional debates. As he began to address a rally in Rawalpindi he was shot by Saad Akbar Babrak, an Afghan national, who was immediately killed by police. The motive was never conclusively established and the case remains surrounded by speculation. The park was renamed Liaquat Bagh, the same place where Benazir Bhutto was killed in 2007.
