Jamal Khashoggi
Killed on 2 October 2018 inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where the journalist had gone to obtain documents for his marriage.
Overview
Jamal Khashoggi was a veteran Saudi journalist and former adviser to members of the royal family who became a critic of the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and moved to the United States, writing columns for the Washington Post. He entered the consulate in Istanbul and never came out; his remains have not been found. Saudi Arabia first denied knowledge of his fate, then acknowledged he had been killed by a team of Saudi agents. A Saudi court convicted eight people in 2020. A United States intelligence report released in 2021 assessed that the crown prince had approved the operation, which Saudi Arabia rejected. The case drew worldwide condemnation.
