Overview
Ito Hirobumi was the leading statesman of Meiji Japan, the first Prime Minister of Japan, serving four terms, and the principal author of the Meiji Constitution of 1889. After the Russo-Japanese War he became the first Resident-General of Korea, a Japanese protectorate from 1905, and was seen by Korean nationalists as the architect of the loss of Korean sovereignty. He was killed at Harbin, where he had traveled to meet a Russian minister. An Jung-geun was tried by a Japanese court and executed in March 1910. Japan formally annexed Korea in August 1910. An is honored as a national hero in both South and North Korea.
