Inukai Tsuyoshi
Killed on 15 May 1932 at his official residence in Tokyo by young naval officers in the May 15 Incident.
Overview
Inukai Tsuyoshi was a veteran liberal politician who became Prime Minister of Japan in December 1931 at the age of seventy-six. He sought to restrain the army after its seizure of Manchuria and was reluctant to recognize the new puppet state of Manchukuo. On 15 May 1932 a group of young naval officers and army cadets, influenced by ultranationalist ideas, entered his residence and shot him. According to accounts he tried to reason with them before he was killed. Public sympathy for the young attackers led to lenient sentences. The incident effectively ended party government in prewar Japan, and cabinets led by admirals and generals followed.
