Hrant Dink
Shot on 19 January 2007 outside the offices of the newspaper Agos in Istanbul by a teenage nationalist.
Overview
Hrant Dink was an Armenian-Turkish journalist and editor-in-chief of the bilingual weekly Agos, who advocated dialogue between Turks and Armenians and spoke openly about the Armenian genocide. He was prosecuted under Article 301 of the Turkish penal code for insulting Turkishness. The gunman, Ogun Samast, was seventeen at the time and was later convicted. Over a hundred thousand people marched at his funeral carrying signs reading We are all Hrant Dink. Years of trials examined the failure of security services that had received warnings about the plot, and in 2021 a court convicted former officials over their roles. The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Turkey had failed to protect his life.
