Francisco Madero
Killed on 22 February 1913 in Mexico City along with Vice President Jose Maria Pino Suarez after a military coup led by Victoriano Huerta.
Overview
Francisco Madero, a wealthy landowner from Coahuila, launched the Mexican Revolution in 1910 with the Plan of San Luis Potosi against the long rule of Porfirio Diaz, and was elected president in 1911. His moderate government disappointed radicals such as Emiliano Zapata while failing to reassure conservatives. In February 1913 a revolt in Mexico City known as the Ten Tragic Days ended when General Victoriano Huerta, commander of the government forces, switched sides and arrested Madero. Madero and Pino Suarez were shot while being transferred to prison, officially during an escape attempt. Outrage at the killing united revolutionary factions, which overthrew Huerta in 1914.
