Daphne Caruana Galizia
Killed on 16 October 2017 by a car bomb near her home in Bidnija, the Maltese investigative journalist had exposed corruption at the highest levels.
Overview
Daphne Caruana Galizia ran Running Commentary, a widely read blog that investigated corruption in Maltese politics and business, including links between senior officials and offshore companies revealed in the Panama Papers. She faced dozens of libel suits at the time of her death. Several men were later convicted for carrying out the bombing and for supplying the device, and a prominent businessman was charged with commissioning the killing. Mass protests demanding justice led Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to resign in January 2020. A public inquiry concluded in 2021 that the state bore responsibility for creating an atmosphere of impunity. The European Union named a journalism prize after her.
