Anna Lindh
Stabbed on 10 September 2003 in a Stockholm department store, the Swedish foreign minister died the following morning.
Overview
Anna Lindh was a Social Democrat who served as minister for the environment and then foreign minister of Sweden from 1998, and was widely seen as a future prime minister. She was a leading campaigner for Swedish adoption of the euro in the referendum scheduled for 14 September 2003. While shopping without bodyguards in the NK department store, she was attacked by Mijailo Mijailovic, a man with a history of mental illness, who was later convicted. The referendum went ahead, and voters rejected the euro. Coming seventeen years after the killing of Olof Palme, her death led Sweden to reconsider security for its politicians.
